What happens when 20 students have to make a significant decision, in a hypothetical situation, together with no assigned roles and no established process?
That was the challenge we gave the Adams County CEO Class of 2027.
Just 20 students working through how to listen, communicate, disagree, contribute, and ultimately come to a decision together.
We do this early in the year as a baseline for understanding how this particular class functions before we begin intentionally building strategy around team dynamics and business operations. It also starts to show us what the structure of this team might look like. Who naturally leads? Who asks questions? Who listens before they speak? Who sees the details? Who sees the bigger picture? What roles are students drawn to, and what parts of running a business are they excited to take ownership of?
Next week, we launch our initial business venture and begin putting some structure around all of it. Students will start identifying roles, learning each other’s strengths, figuring out where they can contribute, and experiencing what it actually takes to operate as a team.
It’s one of the many things that makes CEO different. We can talk about leadership, entrepreneurship, communication, and teamwork, but there is no substitute for putting 20 students in a position where they have to actually practice them.
