Last Wednesday, in the middle of planning an executing their class business, the class toured the Ursa Farmers Co-op location in Camp Point with Susie and Lindsay, who walked us through the purpose of cooperatives, why they exist, and how they function within our local agricultural economy. The class learned how co-ops are built on shared ownership, shared benefit, and shared responsibility, and how these principles allow farmers and communities to thrive together.
We also heard from Scott, who spoke about marketing, pricing, and how UFC and local farmers generate profit in a constantly shifting market. His explanation helped the class understand the business side of agriculture and the strategy required to remain sustainable.
It was an insightful visit that broadened our understanding of cooperative business models and the massive impact they have on our region.
